Why Is the 2022 Oscars Stage Trying to Hypnotize Us?

If all the world’s a stage, then the 2022 Oscars stage is a world from a galaxy far, far away. On Thursday, People released an exclusive photo of the set for Sunday’s 94th annual Academy Awards, and it’s a doozy. The image depicts the Dolby Theatre bathed in fluorescent blue light, with swirling, geometric neon lines twisting and turning against a black backdrop. It’s reminiscent of a hypnosis test and perhaps similarly disorienting, as it’s difficult to tell where one curve begins and another ends.
